What Is a Good CTR?

Optimize Digital Marketing

People click on hundreds of links daily while browsing online. These include links on search engine results pages (SERPs), email links, and social media links.

So, how can you determine the ideal number of clicks for a successful advertising campaign? To assess the effectiveness of your ad campaigns, you need to measure your click-through rate (CTR).

But what is a good CTR, and how can you improve it? In this article, we'll explore what a CTR is, what's considered a good CTR, and strategies for getting more ad clicks.

What Is CTR?

Click-through rate is a metric indicating the percentage of people who see your ad or link and click on it.

You can calculate your CTR by dividing the number of clicks your ad or link receives by the number of impressions (times your ad or link is displayed).

Here's the CTR formula: (clicks/impressions) x 100 = click-through rate

For instance, if your ad receives 50 clicks and 500 impressions, your ad's CTR would be 10%.

You can use CTR to measure the effectiveness of your pay-per-click (PPC) ads, display ads, and social media ads. You can also use it to measure the effectiveness of your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts.

However, in this article, we'll focus on CTR in the context of advertising campaigns, particularly Google Ads campaigns.

What Is a Good CTR?

So, what's a good click-through rate for your ad campaigns? Well, there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

A good CTR can vary significantly depending on the following factors:

  • Industry
  • Platform being used (such as Google, Facebook, or YouTube)
  • Ad formats (such as search, display, or video)

Let's explore each of these factors in detail.

Industry

Certain industries have better CTRs than others. For instance, according to WordStream's 2024 ad benchmark report, the industries with the highest CTRs included advocacy, auto, dating, and travel. The industries with the lowest CTRs included tech, business-to-business (B2B), and consumer services.

Platform

CTRs vary significantly across platforms. Generally, the click-through rate for Google Ads is better than the CTR for social ads on platforms like Facebook

Many people turn to search engines like Google or Bing when they're looking to purchase products or services, making them more inclined to click on ads. Alternatively, most people use social media to connect with friends and family.

On average, Google Ads have a CTR of 6.11%. In contrast, Facebook ads have a much lower average CTR of 0.89%.

Ad Format

Certain types of ads have higher CTRs than others. CTR averages tend to be higher for ads on the Google search network than those on the display network.

Ultimately, there isn't a universal CTR number deemed ''good'' or ''bad.'' As a rule of thumb, aim to achieve a CTR higher than your industry average.

Getting a higher-than-average click-through rate is especially crucial, as it can affect your quality score — a metric search engines like Google use to evaluate the effectiveness of ads, which can impact your ad rank.

How To Improve Your Click-Through Rates

If you want to enhance the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns, here are some ways you can improve your CTR:

Target the Right Keywords for Your Business

Keywords can make or break your ad campaign. Keyword research can help you determine the right keywords to use for your marketing campaigns. Ideally, your keywords should align with your target customers' primary goals when they're searching online.

For example, suppose you run an automotive shop. A potential customer who performs a search query like ''choosing the right car tires'' is likely looking for general information on selecting appropriate car tires. So, it probably won't be a good idea to create a search ad to drive tire sales using the target keyword ''choosing the right car tires.''

However, you could drive tire sales by using keywords like ''buy tires near me'' or ''cheap tires near me,'' as these keywords are more likely to attract high-quality leads close to making a purchase.

Create Copy That Speaks to Your Audience

Your search ad copy has two sections: a headline and a description. Potential customers will only click on your ad if these sections are compelling.

Here are tips to make your ad copy stand out:

  • Use power words. Include words that trigger emotions. For example, words like revealed, unveiled, and exclusive can stir curiosity.
  • Use numbers. Numbers can draw attention. For instance, if you're running a sale on tires, instead of just saying ''Sale on Tires,'' use a specific percentage like ''Get Up to 25% off your first order!''
  • Use a strong call to action (CTA). All ads aim to encourage potential customers to take a desired action. Include engaging CTAs so your potential customers know what steps to take next. For example, ''Shop Now!'' or ''Limited Time Offer!''
