We all know that the social media industry is ever-changing. Social media companies make changes to their platforms in order to better the user experience, as well as provide avenues for businesses to market their products or services. And with a large number of platforms available to consumers today, keeping up with social media updates can be very difficult.
At Optimize Digital Marketing, we believe that informing our customers of platform changes and the addition of features is extremely important. Given that we offer social media management services, it is our job to stay top of social media news and updates.
Today, we will discuss three intriguing social media updates in July 2023. From Meta’s new app and Twitter rebranding to LinkedIn’s AI detector, there are plenty of news stories for the month of July to discuss. Let's get right into it.
Meta, the mother company of Facebook and Instagram, launched its newest app on July 7th. The new app, Threads, has surpassed one hundred million sign-ups. The social media site has become the fastest platform to reach one hundred million users.
To put that into perspective, it took two months for ChatGPT, the AI-powered search and creation tool, to reach one hundred million users, according to Reuters.
Threads was brought to life to compete with Twitter, now known as X. The platform does not have as many features as its counterparts, but Meta has promised new features regarding a user’s feed will be implemented.
One of the features Meta will be adding is a feed housing all posts from the people or brands you follow on the platform. Being that the platform is so new, it is limited in its functionality, however, there are plans to expand the platform features. However, what has yet to be discovered is how relevant the platform will be long term, with seventy percent of the user base dropping since it was launched in early July. More on this space in the future.
Just over the past weekend, Twitter underwent surgery. On Monday, it was announced that Twitter would be known as X. In a post, Elon Musk said, “Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure the freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app.”
Although it was a fast transformation, Musk has been planning the transition since he purchased Twitter in October 2022. According to Search Engine Journal, with Musk buying Twitter, the transition from Twitter to X was pushed up by three to five years due to not needing to build a brand new platform.
The good news is that the platform has not changed how users interact with the social network. Businesses, as well as everyday users, will be able to continue with their social media marketing strategies, as well as content creation. Chief Executive Officer Linda Yaccarino stated that X will be an app that facilitates all things social media. It is a platform with “unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.”
We will see how this change affects the overall user base in the coming months. For now, everything that was put into place since Musk’s takeover should remain. Optimize Digital Marketing will continue to provide the same services for X.
LinkedIn is a platform where users look for employment, and businesses look for candidates that fit their open positions. It has become more difficult for companies to find qualified candidates because of the number of fake accounts that LinkedIn has found on its platform. LinkedIn has combatted the twenty-one million fake accounts by developing an AI image tool that detects fake profiles. They have reported that their AI image tool has a ninety-nine percent success rate in snuffing out fake profiles.
You must be wondering – why the heck would someone want to create a fake profile? According to Search Engine Journal, professionals within the search marketing community believe Google will trust a website if article authors have a LinkedIn profile in their author bios. Others feel it is to build a website that looks credible enough that users will visit it.
How does LinkedIn detect AI-generated images? The LinkedIn AI image tool is proficient at finding AI-generated photos by looking for patterns within the picture. All the AI images share similarities, allowing the tool to weed out what it deems AI-generated.
LinkedIn’s AI detector will help businesses build connections with real users.
