Websites – are what many people would consider to be a necessity, regardless of whether your business is big or small. It is essential in the modern business landscape to reach as many people as possible – even if they are not local to your area or part of your main audience.

Google is hands down the most viewed site on the planet, which is important when you factor in that all the social media platforms that you have created for your business AND your website will show in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) when searching for your business. They can also be found by using specific keywords, which is where SEO comes in.

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of increasing the visibility of your website on a search engine by using tactics that include the use of keywords that consumers use to search for things. Research is required to figure out exactly what keywords you should use, which is dependent on what industry your business is a part of. Gone are the days when you could load up on as many keywords as possible; there needs to be some finesse and strategy to use keywords effectively.

According to Search Engine Land, “Search engines such as Google and Bing use bots to crawl pages on the web, going from site to site, collecting information about those pages and putting them in an index. Think of the index like a giant library where a librarian can pull up a book (or a web page) to help you find exactly what you’re looking for at the time.”

When having a website created, it is important to note some terms that will assist in understanding the what, why, and how to make a website effective in garnering traffic. On-site SEO, or On-page SEO, refers to the optimization of content within the website itself. Off-page SEO focuses on “leveraging other sites and places across the web to improve your position within search rankings.

Let’s focus on on-page SEO, because it is something that you can directly control. Here is a list of factors that come into play when dealing with on-page SEO:

  • Content – When creating a website, relevant content is one of the most important aspects. For one, each page will have different content, so it is necessary to think about what content would drive consumers to make a purchase, or what their intent would be. It is imperative to create content for your website that has depth, uniqueness and does not repeat. Repeat content may hurt the ranking of your website. Keywords, just like the content, must be used with a strategic purpose in mind.
  • Page Speed – Page speed refers to the page loading time. On-page SEO can be affected by it because poor-performing websites will fall further down the list in terms of ranking.
  • Title Tags – It is “an HTML element that specifies the title of the web page.” The title tag is displayed on SERPs with the intention of shedding light on what the business does.
  • URL – Short for a uniform resource locator, or web address. A URL not only helps tell consumers what your business may be about, it also works as a tool to help place the website within SERPs.
  • Choosing a domain – a domain name is after the subdomain (“www”) and before the top-level domain (“.com”). For example, the domain in www.optimizesocialmedia.net is optimizesocialmedia. If possible, attempt to use the most up-to-date version of the business name.
  • Mobile website – Is your website mobile friendly? If not, it can lower your ranking on search engines. Investing in a usable mobile website should help with SEO as well.

It is not enough to focus solely on on-page SEO. Off-page SEO is also an important practice that will enhance your visibility online. For example, backlinking is a process of other sites having your link on their page. Consumers can click on the backlink and be brought directly to that page.

Your social media platforms won’t assist in increasing the ranking of your site but, promoting your content on the website may help in driving traffic to your site. Also, YouTube is a great way to enhance your ranking on Google. If you link to your website in your YouTube content, that will help with SEO, because YouTube is second on the list of most used search engines.
