Why Is My Facebook Business Page Restricted?

With more than 3 billion monthly active users, Facebook is a powerful marketing channel for promoting your business.

Unfortunately, some businesses face the challenge of having their Facebook accounts restricted. A Facebook account that's restricted from advertising loses access to many useful marketing features. If your business account is restricted, you may struggle to get strong results from your Facebook marketing campaigns.

In this article, we'll discuss the increase in accounts being flagged by Facebook and what steps you can take to avoid these issues.

Why Is My Business Page Being Flagged or Restricted?

When you see that Facebook flagged your account, your first question is probably, "Why is my Facebook business page restricted?" There are a few possible explanations.

Meta, Facebook's parent company, has standards that advertisers are required to follow. When advertisers violate these policies and standards, Meta may restrict their ability to advertise on Facebook.

Meta may apply advertising restrictions in the following scenarios:

If you're new to Facebook or Instagram, Meta may temporarily limit your spending and access to advertising features. Once you've proved that you're adhering to Meta's policies for advertisers, Meta will remove these restrictions from your account.

It's important to note that Facebook's algorithm is mainly AI-based and can be sensitive to post copy, page engagement, ad language and graphics, and personal user issues. If you have issues or restrictions affecting a personal account that's tied to your business account, that could also lead to issues with your business's Facebook page.

What Happens When Your Page Gets Flagged or Restricted?

If your business's Facebook page gets flagged or restricted, don't panic. The main effect of a restricted business Facebook page is losing access to certain advertising options you may have had in the past.

Possible consequences include:

  • Limits on the amount an advertiser can spend per day
  • Loss of access to some advertising features
  • Loss of the ability to advertise on Meta platforms

However, these limits aren't necessarily permanent. By taking the right steps, you may be able to restore your account to good standing and eliminate the limits.

What to Do If Your Page Is Flagged or Restricted

Follow these steps if your business's Facebook page is flagged or restricted:

  1. On a computer, go to Meta Business Support Home
  2. Go to Account Overview and click the restricted account you want to address.
  3. You should see a "What you can do" section explaining how to resolve your account's issue. Follow the steps that Meta recommends in this section. Meta may ask you to confirm your identity, complete your verification, secure your account, or request a review.

If Meta tells you to request a review, go through the following steps. You need to be an administrator on the account to request a review:

  1. Go to Business Support Home and click " Account status overview " in the menu on the left side of the page.
  2. Click the restricted account that you want to troubleshoot.
  3. In the "What you can do" section, click " Request review."
  4. Complete the steps that appear on the screen.

Meta will review your account to see whether the restrictions should apply. Typically, Meta reviews cases within 48 hours, but it may sometimes take longer.

If Meta determines that the restrictions should apply, they'll remain in place. If Meta determines that they shouldn't apply, it will remove the restrictions and reinstate your account.

Remember that any ads you ran before Meta restricted your account will not automatically start running again. You'll need to turn them on in Ads Manager.

If I Use a 3rd-Party Marketing Company, Am I Safe From Having My Business Account Restricted?

The best way to avoid profile restrictions is to work only with reputable agencies that follow all community guidelines.

However, Meta may restrict a page due to an individual's actions on the platform. If other people are attached to your business page on Facebook, no agency has the authority to prevent their actions from affecting your page. That's why it's important to know who is connected to your business accounts and their credentials in the digital marketing landscape.

What a reputable agency can do is guide you through best practices for Facebook marketing. Your agency can teach you the things that may get your Facebook account restricted and how to avoid them.

Here at Optimize, we're partnered with Meta. Our team is regularly trained and briefed on the community guidelines to ensure we're on top of all updates regarding the platform. Our ads team is also blueprint-certified to ensure we're providing the best ad services we can.

Tips for Avoiding Issues

You can sometimes reverse the restrictions on your business's Facebook page, but it's better to avoid them in the first place. Try these tips to keep your account in good standing.

Read Through Meta's Policies

Before posting on Facebook or running an ad campaign, you should read through all the rules and policies that apply to your account. Understanding these policies will help you avoid accidental violations that may lead Meta to restrict your account.

Be Smart About Whom You Allow to Access Your Account

The best way to avoid issues with your account is to get a specialized partner like Optimize to assist with your social media management rather than asking an employee or friend. People who aren't experienced with digital marketing — or Facebook marketing, specifically — may end up making mistakes that harm your account's standing on Facebook.
