What are YouTube Shorts?

As we continuously navigate the role of social media and how people are consuming content, short-form videos are becoming increasingly more popular as platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube develop new ways to keep users’ attention.

Here is an example:

The reason these shorter videos have become popular is that users are able to consume these videos on-the-go or just binge watch 100 of them in a row without investing too much time to consume the media.

Now Google and YouTube are getting in on the short-form video craze by announcing their YouTube Shorts beta in the United States!

In a blog post from YouTube Shorts Product Lead Todd Sherman, we can see that based on feedback from users and an emphasis on mobile-first creation, the product should provide brands and creators with an easy convenient way to produce short videos.

The first version of YouTube Shorts provided its users with basic tools like multi-segment camera in order to combine video clips, music synchronization, fast forward or slow-mo video and more. Now, creators have the ability to add text to the video timeline and pull audio from other Shorts creations in order to rearrange them in their own creations.

Another feature being rolled out soon is the ability to pull audio from many more videos on YouTube, increasing users access to videos by the billions. This will be an “opt-out” feature for certain creators, so not all long-form videos will be accessible, but with the sheer number of videos on the platform, there will be no shortage of creative ways YouTube Shorts users can make videos their own.

YouTube Shorts will eventually find their way to a dedicated section on the YouTube homepage so that video watchers have an easy way to find new content creators. Mobile could be a different story, and YouTube is currently testing a tab that will allow users to watch Shorts with a single click.

The integration between YouTube Shorts and YouTube will also allow for seamless connections between the two platforms. For example, if you hear a song clip on YouTube Shorts but don’t know who the artist is, you’ll be able to see a link to the original audio source directly on YouTube and watch the video to find the song on YouTube!

The Shorts beta was introduced on March 18th, 2021. Not all users have access to this feature yet but we are excited to see how users and business owners can take advantage of this new, exciting platform!
